Hearn Wins Purse Bid For Butler-Yafai, Set For 10/17

By John Angus Macdonald

Matchroom Sport have confirmed they are looking to stage Paul Butler’s British super flyweight title defence against Kal Yafai on October 17 in Birmingham, having won purse bids for the fight.

Paul Butler, 17-1 (8 KOs), won the vacant British title back in November 2012 with a first round stoppage victory over John Donnelly. Butler hasn’t defend the title since he captured it, instead focusing on the Commonwealth and Inter-Continental titles as made his way up the world rankings.

Last June, Butler stepped up in weight to claim the IBF Bantamweight title against countryman Stuart Hall by split decision. He then relinquished the title immediately as he dropped back down to his natural weight of 115 lbs in the hope of claiming a second world title in a second weight class.

Sadly for Butler, he wasn’t able to achieve this as he was stopped in the eighth round of his unsuccessful IBF super flyweight title against Zolani Tete in March.

For 2008 Olympian, Kal Yafai, 15-0 (10 KOs), Butler will represent the biggest challenge of his career to date. However, Yafai is no stranger to title level having previously won the Commonwealth super flyweight title—formerly held by Butler—before vacating the title.

Butler returns to action for the first time since the Tete loss this Saturday night against Gustavo Molina. While it remains to be seen if Butler intends to drop down to domestic level, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport revealed to BoxingScene.com that Queensberry Promotions (Butler’s promoters) made and offer to stage the fight.

“I’m really pleased to win the bids for this fight. It’s one I’ve wanted to see for a long time,” Hearn said.

“We received an offer from Queensberry Promotions last week to make the fight but chose to go to purse bids and won. The fight will take place on October 17 in Birmingham and will be another big domestic fight on Sky Sports.”
