Gonzalez Rejects Gamboa, Chavez-Manfredo Not Close

By Rick Reeno

A source close to featherweight contender Yuriorkis Gamboa has advised BoxingScene.com that WBC champion Jhonny Gonzalez rejected a "lucrative six figure deal" to face Gamboa on September 10 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The source reached out to BoxingScene in response to an earlier story where Gonzalez made numerous statements regarding his willingness to face Gamboa in September.

Contrary to some of the circulated reports, a deal for a November middleweight fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Peter Manfredo has not been reached. The two sides are not even close to reaching a financial agreement. Manfredo is also being pursued by WBA champion Felix Sturm for the fall. A source close to the Chavez negotiations told BoxingScene - "The fight is all the way on November 19. Right now there is no reason to rush a deal to finalize an opponent for Julio."
