Questions immediately followed the big announcement on Tuesday afternoon of Golden Boy Promotions’ plans for a September 15 showdown between Saul Alvarez and Victor Ortiz.

The bout is scheduled to headline a Showtime pay-per-view broadcast, but is contingent on Ortiz getting past – or at least not losing to – Josesito Lopez next weekend, which also airs on Showtime.

Even if that hurdle is cleared, there is also the matter of Top Rank having a hold on the September 15 date for a pay-per-view event of his own.

The dynamics of that rumored show parallel that of Alvarez-Ortiz, as Top Rank hopes to stage the long demanded clash between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and lineal middleweight king Sergio Martinez. A Nevada commission source has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Top Rank is interested in placing the bout at Thomas & Mack, to be distributed by and air on HBO PPV.

Golden Boy didn’t seem particularly concerned about sweating out next weekend’s results on Showtime. The California-based company is even less worried about whatever Top Rank may or may not have in store on Mexican Independence Day.

“We're not concerned about what other promoters do,” stated Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions when asked of the possibility of going head to head with Top Rank. “We're only concerned about our own business and that has served us very well.”
