Gilberto Keb Baas Upsets Omar Nino, Wins WBC Title

By Jhonny Gonzalez

At the Poliforum Zamna in Merida, Yucatán, Mexico, little known journeyman Gilberto Keb Baas (34-20-4, 21KOs) pulled off the upset of the year with a twelve round majority decision over Omar Nino (30-4, 12KOs) to win the WBC junior flyweight title. Nino went down the first and eight rounds of the contest. The scores were 116-110, 115-111 and 113-113. Baas now wins his last seven bouts.

In the co-feature, Ana Maria Torres (23-3-2, 14KOs) retained her WBC super flyweight title with a sixth round stoppage of Hollie Dunaway (23-9-1, 10KOs).

Interesting 24 hours: within the period (allowing for time zones) Brian Villoria, who administered on Keb Baas his first stoppage loss but lost to Nino, won by TKO 7 in Manila.

LOL even good mexican fighters are prone to losing to mexican journeymen. I swear this is how they get as many champions as they do.
