Gervonta Davis To Stand Trial on Assault Charge on November 29

Former IBF super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis (19-0, 18 KOs) is not going to fight again this, but he is going to stand trial on a misdemeanor second-degree assault charge.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Davis appeared for a hearing this morning Baltimore District Court and received the trial date.

The state dropped a felony first-degree assault charge. The second-degree assault charge carries a maximum potential sentence of 10 years and/or a $2,500 fine.

BoxingScene.com first reported the arrest last month, but there was very little information regarding the incident that led to the assault charges.

The details have now become clear in the case.

Davis is facing charges in connection with an August 1 incident in which a claimed childhood friend, Anthony Wheeler, alleges that Davis punched him in the side of the head with a gloved fist.

In the criminal complaint, Wheeler claims that he was minding his own business at the Upton Boxing Center in West Baltimore when a fight broke out between Davis and his brother. Wheeler has alleged that after the boxer’s bodyguard broke up the altercation, Davis came around and “sucker punched me very violently.”

Wheeler said he was knocked out by the punch and afterwards he was diagnosed with a concussion at St. Agnes Hospital. He pressed charges with the District Court Commissioner on August 3, and a warrant for Davis' arrest was served in mid-September. As previously reported, the boxer was released after posting a $100,000 unsecured property bond.

Davis has had a rocky year. In January, he captured the International Boxing Federation lightweight title by knocking out Jose Pedraza in the seventh round. Then in May, Davis successfully defended his title with a third-round knockout of Liam Walsh in London.

He saw action back in August as part of the huge Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He failed to make weight for the fight, losing his IBF title on the scale. He secured a stoppage victory over Francisco Fonseca, but the ending was controversial because Fronseca got hit unintentionally to the back of the head. Davis was likely on his way to a stoppage win.
