Echo Arena, Liverpool - EBU/WBC silver super middleweight champion George Groves (21-2, 16KOs) stopped Denis "Mommma's Boy" Douglin (17-4, 10KOs) in the seventh round of action.
Groves had some trouble at the start with Douglin's style. In the third, some damage and a cut appeared on the bridge of Groves' nose. By the midway point, Douglin appeared to be fading a little bit from the pressure of the bigger man.
In the seventh, a combination to the head and body sent Douglin down hard on his back. He made it up, holding on for dear life as Groves was trying to finish. Groves continued to pour on the pressure and the punches, until the referee jumped in to wave things off.
Groves in the mandatory challenger to undefeated WBC champion Anthony Dirrell. He closes out a big year. He started off in May with a massive rematch against IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch, before a crowd of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. Groves was stopped in the eight round, but bounced back in September with a twelve round decision win over Christopher Rebrasse.
