Garcia: Verdejo-Rodriguez Could Be Like Cotto-Margarito!

By Ryan Burton recently sat down with top trainer Robert Garcia, who has a stable of fighters that is rapidly growing.

One fighter he works with is exciting super featherweight prospect Saul Rodriguez (19-0-1, 14KOs) who recently scored a first round stoppage of Ivan Najera at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The unexpected short ending was the most impressive outing for Rodriguez to date.

A fight that many fans would like to see is the young Mexican-American against his promotional stablemate Felix Verdejo of Puerto Rico who campaigns at 135 pounds but has stated on many occasions that he can make the super featherweight limit.

Verdejo, who also sports a 19-0 record with 14 knockouts, went the full ten round distance with Najera last June in an HBO televised fight.

Garcia feels that the fight could be a big event in the future after both youngsters build up their names.

"I think that Top Rank will build that fight up. That could be a big fight down the road and maybe be a HBO Championship Boxing or maybe even a pay-per-view fight but not right now. That fight is at least a few years away from when it is big and means something. It could end up being a Cotto-Margarito 1 type of fight," Garcia told
