Frank Warren on Dubois Helping Povetkin Prepare For Joshua

By Chris McKenna, courtesy of The Daily Star

DANIEL DUBOIS has travelled to Russia to learn from one of the world’s best heavyweights.

Dubois, 20, has jetted in to spar with Alexander Povetkin, who faces WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO champion Anthony Joshua later this month.

This will help the Londoner with his ambition to become the best heavyweight on the planet.

It will also be valuable as he prepares to face American veteran Kevin Johnson on October 6 in Leicester.

The experience of mixing it with a world title contender and Olympic gold medallist can prove vital in Dubois’ boxing education.

He turned professional before he could rack up huge experience as an amateur at senior level.

So mini missions like this to learn from someone who has mixed it at the top of both codes will only help him add to his talent.

Dubois’ clash with Johnson will be his ninth pro outing and we couldn’t be happier with how he is progressing.

Of course there is still a lot to learn, and the fight with Johnson will be a further marker of how far he has come.

Dubois is undoubtedly a world champion in the making – it’s a matter of when and not if in my book.

Sparring sessions with Povetkin will help give his coaches a better sense of how far he still has to go before he can make that happen.

Meanwhile, at the top of the heavyweight tree there is also Tyson Fury against WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

The naysayers are out in force again, claiming this fight won’t happen or that Fury doesn’t fancy it anymore.

Eddie Hearn has been leading the charge, while there has been an incorrect report in America that a member of Fury’s team reckons that he is ready to pull out.

Maybe it is jealousy from some that don’t want to see this fight happening as they can’t handle how big it is going to be.

But they should get on board with it because this fight is definitely happening and the date and venue will be revealed soon, once things have been finalised with television networks on both sides of the Atlantic.
