Frank Warren Gives Very High Praise To Mark Price

By Frank Warren, courtesy of The Daily Star

MARK PRINCE got the recognition he deserves with an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

The former fighter, who I managed and promoted, is now taking on another type of foe as he tackles the knife-crime epidemic on London’s streets.

Prince’s 15-year-old son, Kiyan, was stabbed and killed 13 years ago when he attempted to stop another child from being bullied.

He had been a talented young footballer, shining at QPR’s academy.

Prince has shown remarkable strength and courage to help ensure fewer parents have to go through the hell he did.

The world title challenger has channelled his grief by setting up The Kiyan Prince Foundation.

He speaks to those in the inner cities and tries to promote boxing training as a way for youths to keep away from the gang culture that is ruining lives on a daily basis.

Prince is not the only one of course, as the Hackney Boxing Academy is doing great work too, with the brilliant Anna Cain striving to improve lives.

I’ve been down to the Hackney Boxing Academy and I was almost floored by the remarkable work they are doing there.

They are not only teaching boxing but educating kids and showing them there is a life beyond running around the streets getting into trouble.

Just this week knife crime took the life of Jayden Moodie, a 14-year-old who was apparently a keen boxer.

Maybe if those responsible for the attack had got involved in a sport they may not have ended up wandering into the horrible lives they now lead.

Sport can bring change. At Hackney Boxing Academy they ensure their kids have mentors who are boxers from the area.

Teenagers are not going to listen to the likes of Theresa May or Jeremy Corbyn or even old geezers like me, but they will listen to sports people and Prince is one of those.

He was a talented fighter who was saved from a life in prison by boxing and continues to champion how sport can save lives. It is only right he got reward for his work.
