  • I read it back when I found out the Russian govt mandated it for students (which seemed surreal/exotic given the California academic system's demonization of everything western & fetish for communism).

Moreso I became very interested in Solzhenitsyn as a person as well as other Soviet defectors like Bezmenov. Not only for their accounts of Soviet *********** but especially their analysis of post-1960s American decadence, how we've become an irresistible target for neo-bolshevism & the antithesis of the stoic/cowboy/quaker foundations (productivity-centric subcultures rather than centrally coerced labor) that led to our economic ascension.

I see their observations back then as being very prophetic. Every celebrity becoming Jane Fonda until it is prerequisite. The eventual transition of decadent music subcultures into radical bolshevik groups like antifa. The external perspective Solzhenitsyn provides is a very refreshing break from R vs D.
