Why The Lawsuit Means DAZN Boxing Is Thru In The US

Doesn't matter who wins or who loses the lawsuit.

You can read the complaint here:

This document is a complaint filed against DAZN North America Inc., DAZN Media Inc., DAZN US LLC, Perform Investment Limited, Golden Boy Promotions, LLC, Golden Boy Promotions, Inc., Oscar De La Hoya, and Does 1-25. The complaint alleges breach of contract and other claims related to Canelo Alvarez's largest boxing contract worth a minimum of $365 million for 11 fights over 5 years with DAZN, which the plaintiffs allege has been breached. The complaint provides background on the announcement and terms of the historic contract between Alvarez, his promoter Golden Boy Promotions, and sports broadcaster DAZN.

Page 24, point #5 of the Prayer for Relief means Canelo will never be on DAZN again (or fight for GBP again) unless someone brings in a rainmaker quickly to set things right.

    But, it's deeper than that.

I think DAZN's plan to grab US market share via boxing just died with this lawsuit.

The immediate damage is clear. How is there going to continue to be GoldenBoy cards on DAZN with this lawsuit looming? The relationship between DAZN and GBP was heavily dependent on Canelo and that's over with.

I'd be shocked if a cancelation (they'll say postponement) of every and any planned GBP card on DAZN DID NOT happen. Or, with little to nothing officially announced, they'll simply keep silent. Say goodbye to Ryan Garcia vs Luke Campbell. No way DAZN pays GBP while this is happening.

    But, there's more.

What do you do if you're Tyson Fury? You've got Wilder to beat again then AJ waiting. Except, when you get past Deontay again you're going to have Eddie Hearn trying to get you to do the fight on DAZN. This, when you are signed to ESPN on one side of the Atlantic and BTSport on the other side. What the hell do you need with DAZN?

AJ would agree. Yes, he is signed to Matchroom, but the only broadcaster that has AJ's rights is SkySports. He doesn't need DAZN either, especially for this fight. The only way DAZN becomes a player is if they have minimum 60 million for AJ and Tyson to split and given what just happened to Canelo, I would say AJ could be forgiven for doubting they would or could pay it.

What if you're Deontay Wilder and you somehow turn the tables on Fury? Now it's you looking at AJ, and you're hearing Hearn go on about the showdown between the Bronze Bomber and Femi on DAZN. Except again, this is the same outfit with the shady offer of 100 million that would have blown up after one fight and is in court with Canelo, who they couldn't pay. Do you let bygones be bygones and listen to DAZN this time?

This is going to have a domino effect on A LOT of boxers. It's a bad look and the best thing DAZN could do is mend fences with Canelo and GBP as quickly as possible, even if it's just short term.

Because if they don't, we're gonna see more than just Canelo walk.

They're going to watch any chance they may have had to be a player in the US boxing market get gaveled away.

I'd say good riddance, if it means Hearn goes with it, too.

Everything in boxing fails. Might as well let the sport fail at this point.

If your interpretation is accurate, expect Floyd or Haymon to make a "smart investment" to purchase DAZN and rebrand it.

        Crazy? I don't think so.

Haymon let Mikey fight there. First step.

Floyd created a relationship with RIZIN who used to be featured on DAZN. Second step.

Floyd's Golden Boy-promoted fights were rotated on DAZN. Third step.

The mystery venture between Floyd and Dana White could be Zuffa Boxing fighters getting exposure. Fourth step.

It would let non-Golden Boy promoters basically have a shared global platform with PBC, which frees them from having to deal with Arum, thus further freezing Arum out unless he's willing to play by their rules, otherwise it goes to PPV.

        Likely? I say yes.

I don't know how likely your scenario is, but it kinda alludes to what I think was DAZN's biggest error in trying to get a foothold in the US.

They should have thrown money at more than just GBP.

What was keeping DAZN from cutting a deal with the PBC and TR?

Probably only Eddie Hearn's arrogance...DLH's too.

Instead of signing individual fighters, make the same broadcast deals with TR and PBC that was made with Matchroom.

Those fights between promoters all of a sudden might have been easier to make.

DAZN may not even be a part of the lawsuit when it's all said and done. If Oscar really did put it in writing that DAZN has last say about Canelo's opponents they're off the hook. Oscar will be on the hook to pay Canelo because he didn't put that in his contract with Canelo.

My understanding is that Arum has never been a fan of shared networks like DAZN or PBC. He wants Top Rank and he wants ESPN (previously HBO). Period. The only time he will work with another promoter is when there's enough money to go around. That's why Wilder/Fury got made and why MayPac got made, along with a select few others, but you won't see Crawford facing a PBC fighter or fighting someone on DAZN. Same as with the majority of Top Rank fighters.

Depending on the Loma/Teofimo outcome one of them likely could do it because Haney has WBC and can draw money. I would argue that if Teofimo could pull it out, Arum would probably jump at the chance to book him against Haney in a unification fight.

Everyone else seems willing to work together to do business every now and then even if it's not an ultra lucrative fight.

I think this is kind of a disaster for boxing in general. Anyone looking to invest in this sport is going to see it as a poisoned chalice when you can offer the most lucrative contract imaginable to the cash cow and he still throws it back in your face.

I agree, it's fking karma at this point with all the ****ing BS buying of judges and robbed fights. It like almost every fight is rigged now a days and it's blatant and shameless.

As long as Arum and Top Rank get F'd over then thats good for us fans and the sport. TR and Arum are literally why the best fights never get made or happened way too late!
