  • THROWBACK: Lomachenko/Russell Scorecard - was it truly a whitewash...?

Here's the thing. This fight had a LARGE number of rounds where neither guy landed. Which means you have to revert to the other three scoring criteria.

Ring Generalship - I know people on NSB don't like this criteria, but it matters. We need to understand who is ultimately appearing to be in control. A case can be made for either guy, because half of the rounds Lomachenko was straight up running. In all but three rounds Loma would literally throw no punches for the first 1-2 minutes of the round and very few punches the last minute. Is that being a ring general? It depends. If you land EVERY shot yes. Loma did not.

Effective Aggression - Once again, a case could be made for either guy because Russell was clearly the aggressor the entire fight except for three rounds, but Loma was more effective with his aggression for 6 rounds. The other three rounds were a tossup because neither guy really landed anything.

Defense - You would think Loma would wash this category, but you'd be wrong. In terms of defense, both guys had a high guard up the vast majority of the fight. Loma certainly did better defending as far as gloves up, but he could only hit Russell when he was in close. Russell had a perfect strategy of keeping Loma at the end of the jab which worked to get him 5 rounds. At that range Loma was not able to land nearly as much. That's defense.

That said, I see no scenario where Russell wins the fight. The best I can see is a draw (Round 1 had a strong start from Gary), worst I can see is 8-4 to Loma (Round 2 is the core definition of a 'swing round' and Round 4 depends on what you like to see out of a fighter). The only CLEAR rounds were 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12 and I gave Loma 4 of those rounds. Everything else was a subjective tossup.

I said it before. Close but clear loss for Gary, but well worth a rematch. I think in terms of styles clash, Gary performed better against Loma than anyone else has.

Not a blowout, not a whitewash.
