Comments Thread For: Porter: Best Must Fight Best When We Come Back To Contend With NFL, NBA

Shawn Porter doesn't know who he'll face in his first fight following the COVID-19 pandemic. The former IBF and WBC welterweight champion is absolutely sure, though, that promoters, managers and boxers had better be ready to match the best against the best once they're allowed to schedule fights again. Otherwise, Porter suspects it'll be impossible for what's already a niche sport to compete for attention with the NFL, NBA and other that sports that are more popular.

I completely agree. Now Crawford needs to man up and fight this man, instead of washes up Brook who hasn't beat anyone relevant in years, has only fought a few times in the past few years, and hasn't fought at 147 in years.

LOL, why did he say “we will even throw Terrance Crawford’s name in there.” Did anyone else catch that? Huh? WTF? He said it almost like Crawford is an afterthought and not a top P4P fighter in the world. But we can give Porter a pass, he may have just been thinking and mentioning most of the fighters Haymon controls or manages.

Paychecks are going to be a lot smaller. That's for sure.

Because he fights on a different network, on a different promotion. Networks and promotions come together for PPVs, spend millions on promotions and only want to come together when there are millions to make for more the. Just the fighters. Porter knows the business, it’s astounding to be that so called boxing fans don’t.....

Boxing will come back strong in the USA if ESPN and FOX especially put it on their networks especially if the nfl doesn’t come back this Autumn. Boxing will have a giant opportunity on the two biggest sport networks if that happens. Hopefully Showtime lobbies to get more big fights from PBC as well. Fighters need to take pay cuts though and that needs to be explained to them.

Everyone on this boxing forum knows about everything you stated and much more, especially that Porter and Crawford fight on a different network. I pay for DAZN & ESPN, and have every Cable TV Channel. And I’ve been watching boxing for a little over 30 years. I met Al Haymon recently when he came to Philadelphia during the Williams title fight where he was stopped. I was in the front row when he came up to say hello to me and others sitting beside me.

My point was not anything you mentioned. I know all of that already. I was just making light of how Porter mentioned all the other top welterweights first in his comments to fight each other when everything is restored, without mentioning Crawford at the top of the list, regardless of affiliation, because Crawford is one of the best welterweights period.

And if Arum and Haymon came together for Wilder (voted top PBC fighter in 2019) & Fury (ESPN-Top Rank, one of their top fighters), then we will get Crawford vs Spence or Crawford vs any of the top welterweights. The only reason people should have doubt now for that fight or any top welterweights to fight from Arum’s & Haymon’s stable in 2020 or 2021, is if Arum vs Haymon couldn’t work together to put together Wilder vs Fury. I believe they established a working relationship that benefits both of them, other promotors, and their fighters financially. I don’t see any problems with them making fights right now, regardless of the network, if both benefit.

A lot of bigger fights are definitely going to have to happen NOW! No more marinating or showcase after showcase fights.
