Default Max Baer

Anyone else find him as interesting as I do?

A murderous puncher with a granite chin and a superb killer instinct, with seemingly unlimited upside, until Frankie Campbell dies after being KO'd. Of course he does show flashes of his former self on occasion and is able to win the title. However, he loses to a lot of fighters that he shouldn't have because his will to fight was zapped by the earlier death of an opponent.

It's hard to tell how good he could truly have been had that not occurred. Ron Howard's depiction of him in the movie Cinderella Man did a huge disservice to the man he truly was IMO.

He was the real deal.

The death of an opponent didn't hinder his career.

Joe Louis did that.

Certainly an interesting character and watching his fights is quite enjoyable considering the way he liked to showboat, lots of smiling and plenty of back hands. He was a strong man with a lot of power but not too much beyond that, it was a very poor era for the heavyweight division.

When the Campbell kid died, as a result of his fight with Baer, it took something out of him. He lost his will to fight, especially in the ferocious manner as before. Granted he showed flashes of his prior form in certain fight but for all intents and purposes he was a changed fighter. That's not to demean those who defeated him but if the tragedy hadn't have occurred things would have probably been much different.

From what I gather it was many years before he could truly address the death of Campbell. He held a few exhibition bouts and donated his purses to the family of Campbell. I've also read that he paid for all of Campbell's children to attend college.

Question. How did you like the way Max was portrayed as a horrible person in Cinderella Man ? If I were a relative I think I would have had a real problem with it. I understand Max Jr was very upset.

Yeah, that was bogus. Ron Howard essentially trashed a man's reputation for a cheap plot device. Ridiculous.

Absolutely. It could have been done some other way.The real story was a man overcoming all odds to win the heavyweight title. It's a shame that those who aren't familiar with Max Bear think of him as some kind of monster. I wonder if Max JR ever considered filing a lawsuit against Howard ? Would that even stand up in a court of law ? Ron Howard should be ashamed of himself.
