  • What is Arum going to do to avoid making the Chavez Jr/Martinez fight?

    1. Send Sulamain a bigger check than usual?

    2. Make a deal with Dibella to let Chavez Jr fight Cotto or Canelo and guarantee Martinez a shot at the winner (which he won't get)?

    3. Drop the WBC belt?

That's all I can think of.

Bob Arum has avoided making the "biggest" fight of the last 10 years, Mayweather vs Pacquiao, with a lot of success. He has come up with a way to not only avoid it but also make Floyd look bad for the most part, until recently that more and more people have caught on to what has been going on.

I am pretty sure that Bob will come up with a way to avoid a lesser fight in Martinez vs Chavez Jr, while making Martinez seem like the bad guy who didn't want the fight.

Chavez gonna look really bad if he don't man up and fight Sergio. Bob can have him vactate it worst comes to worst but damn..... Does pride and respect mean anything anymore in Boxing???? Show some balls and fight Martinez. His pops wouldn't run from anyome the way he is doing right now. But then again Jr aint **** like is pops. Sr dropped a dud when he knocked up Jrs mom. Lol

He'll vacate the belt, since the championship isn't that important with a guy like Jr.
Chavez Jr doesn't depends on a championship belt to generate large amounts of money since people will follow him just because he's the son of the legend, not because he's the best boxer at the moment. If he leaves the belt they're going to say that Martinez wasn't flexible with the date of the fight or something like that and that Jr is going to get a better fight against Cotto.
Since Cotto looked pretty good against Margarito most people would think that this is going to be a super hiper ultra mega fight between two great boxers, and they won't really care that there's not going to be any title involved.

Your missing the key point. The whole reason Cotto wants any part of Chavez Jr is the potential to grab a 4th title in as many divisions. Be the first Rican to do so. Chavez vacates, then there won't be any reason for the Cotto/Chavez Jr fight, other than $$. But Cotto can make money against anyone in NY, so that title is important. It won't get vacated

Not really, I know that the main reason for Cotto to fight Jr is for a world title in a 4th different weight class, but even without the title this could be a massive money generator, even more than Cotto could generate against other boxer. Also picture this, Jr vacates and fights Cotto. If Cotto wins then suddenly the WBC is going to say that Cotto is going to be the mandatory challenger for the WBC title and could make a fight with Martinez. If Jr wins well he'll continue generating money.

Promoters like belts more than people think though. It's a good marketing tool, if you can't advertise a fight as a "championship bout" it won't have as much mass appeal. Arum probably spent a lot of money bribing Sulaiman to make Martinez diamond champion and let Chavez Jr fight for the real belt against Zbik. He didn't go through that whole mess just to vacate the belt one fight later when Jr is on the verge of a super fight.

Arum will make Jr. vacate and say that Sergio is not a big enough name and that he's not promoted properly. He then offers Sergio a shot at Paqcuiao if he signs with Top Rank which will be Pacuiao's last fight and we never see Floyd vs Paqcuiao.

No way he lets Chavez take on Martinez. He'll pit him against Canelo so he gets all the money, that is the fight that brings in the most cash
