Default Shin Splints. Help!

Anyone have any advice for dealing with shin splints? It is really effecting my boxing, running and basketball workouts. It has been like this for a couple of weeks now and I can't seem to get rid of them.

THanks!

hey man. i think with any injury take some time out. if you try to push through it you will exagerate the injury and make it worse. take a few weeks off for it to heal before going back. any idea what caused them? i presume you do lots of running. if so invest in some realy good running shoes. ive never had the money to get a good pair but i know that many people swear by them.

I used to get these, although I can't remember what I actually did to cure them. Do a bit of research, I'm pretty sure using either cold or hot (can't remember which) packs on your shins when you're resting will help. A period of complete rest (a few weeks) is probably the most advisable thing.

Make sure you're wearing good quality footwear, that was key for me, I always wear two pairs of socks now too for extra cushioning. I do all my running on concrete and I don't get them anymore thankfully.

Look into barefoot/minamalist style running. Don't have to run barefoot if you don't want it's just a technique of running where you land on the ball of your foot instead of the heel.

I started a few months ago and haven't had any problems with shin splints since then.

one thing that we tend to forget while training is to make sure our shoes are done up - tight - from the bottom to the very top islets (holes). Ice and tight shoes (and a day or two off which has been suggested.

Good luck.

Like others have said make sure your running shoes are suited to you, everybody has different feet and if you get the wrong pair, even if they are expensive as hell they will just make your condition worse, and you probably develop new pains and aches.

Also take some time out to let them heal, I had shin splints a few months ago, I took some time off running, got a new pair of running shoes for my bday and now I dont have the same problems, although now Im getting knee problems instead.....

I forgot to say, stop doing so much skipping aswell until your shins are healed, skipping really aggravated mine even when I wasnt doing much running.

And Hugh Grant its best to wear normal gym shoes for skipping instead of running shoes

hey man, i've had shin splints, reason being that my calf muscles were too tight. so i had to stretch those.

whatever the reason, u need to rest them up man. shin splints are because of too much pressure on ur shins. u need to stretch ur leg muscles and give them time to heal. whenever ur resting, put ur legs up, let them rest up.

good way to stretch ur calf muscles: stand close in front of a wall. put ur toes up high against the wall as flat as u can (facing the ceiling) with the heel touching the floor. now as ur heel is as close to the wall as possible, try to stand as close to the wall as u can. u should start to feel a stretch in ur calfs. but do it slowly, don't wanna rip anything..

hope it makes sense. good luck bro.

Normal gym shoes are cross trainers right? I would think for skipping you would need more cushioning on the toes area.
