As good as Roy was he could never take a punch

Years of fighting D level competition masked this flaw but it finally caught up with him with interest.
Tarver & Johnson damn near made him a comatose patient and the punch today was nothing special but had him rolling on the floor like a baby.
Once his reflexes and speed went his punch resistance was well and truly exposed.

I think he still had decent punch resistance in his prime, watch his fight with hopkins, he took some shots in that fight, but they looked like the didn't affect him one bit, even in many of his fights, ive seen him take punches and they didnt effect him. It's just age and those punches you don't see coming, can get anyone.

He'd been through 50 fights in five different weight classes by the time of his first KO loss. It was just a long accumulation of punishment that broke him down, and Tarver and Johnson were lucky enough to get him at the right time. Similar to Leon Spinks and Trevor Berbick getting wins over a worn out Muhammad Ali.

Could that be the reason he never fought: McClellan, Jackson or Benn.
