Default Gymnastics

This is something everyone should get into, Gymnast's are one of the pinacles of pure strength and agility and that can help alot in the ring. They are well conditioned, strong athletes that surpass imo every sport in the functunial strength department.

So my quistion to you is, why not do a strength training regime like a gymnast while still training like a boxer (shadow boxing, bag work, conditioning ect.)

If I didn't do boxing, I would do gymnastics instead. I think if you find a lot of the bodyweight training that they do to supplement your strength-specific boxing training, you can't go wrong.

Gymnastics is excellent for muscular endurance and overall upper body strength, i'd assume what they do for strength is mostly bodyweight based

yes you've all assumed right, Gymnastics routines are based mainly on bodyweight, Pullups, Pushups, Plyometrics and Ring routines are godly for upperbody strength. Add that with some lower body strength training and your boxing training and you have a recipe for sucsess

gymnastics kick ass. glad to see other people have respect for the hard work gymnists put in.

personally, modern wushu, combined with some pure gymnastic conditioning if your wushu coach doesnt kick your ass through work, might be not only more appealing but also more directly associated with boxing.

modern wushu is the artform of utilising martial arts forms for performance's sake. modern wushu forms start from fairly athletic, and go all the way up to an extremely advanced gymnastic level that very few people ever achieve in general. it is different from what i do(traditional wushu) as what i do is focused on purely hurting people and will appear graceful but certainly not as flowery. but modern wushu is every bit as challenging and i was thinking of doing it for its own challenges.

gymnastics, as well as modern wushu, will no doubt increase your overall strength, but will increase coordination, sense of timing, differen kinds of strength/endurances, discipline, and just a ton of ***** more.

if anyone is going to take up this dual approach, keep me in the loop as i would love to hear about it and how your boxing progresses.

My Dad coaches a gymnast for the Canadian national team. They are in England right now competing in the World Championships. Both my parents were gymnasts when they were young, I've grown up around the sport my whole life. When I was boxing my Dad would help me out with training tips all the time.

Here's a video of my dad's gymnast at the Canadian Championship last June, that's my dad helping him up.
