but i have some concerns about it, i am a memeber off a whitecollar boxing gym, in the uk

but can someone put my mind too rest lol???????? basically i don't want a broken nose but i know it's going to happen eventually when i start to sparr so how much does it hurt???? and also how much off a beating would you have too take to get bleeding on the brain? i mean i know in amateure boxing it would be called off before any real damage but, i am a hard hitter(slow but hard when i hit) so i know i will be parred up with someone off the same standards also i have a half a fake tooth at the front off my mouth, i do have a mouthgaurd thats moulded too my mouth(from the dentist cost 220) that i had from rugby so even wearing this is it likely to knock this tooth out???

cheers

You're not eventually guaranteed to get a broken nose. My nose has only bled 3 times in a couple of years of training and fighting. Another guy who i train with has had 40+ fights and only a couple of bleeding noses too. I haven't had a black eye or any dental problems either. If you have a decent defence, you hardly ever get busted up badly. So no there is really nothing to worry about.

Well my 3rd week of sparring I got my first broken nose from a sharp counter-jab and look a bit different (not "that" different) =[ well, I started sparring after 2 weeks of doing boxing training and my defence was still cruddy, I was a bit more of a slugger and my footwork/upperbody movement was iffy at the time. That and we don't spar half-seriously.

Nowadays my face usually isn't touched and I must say it's nice. If you don't like broken noses and excessive swelling/bleeding of the face and mouth I recommend sharpening up that defense and starting with light drills/sparring and working yourself up to full sparring with knocking out being one of the objectives.

I broke my nose the third time I sparred. The trainer I had didn't teach me very much defense, and I got thrown in there with another guy who was just beginning too and he went wild, hitting too hard etc. As I leanred some defense, and did most of my sparring with more experienced people (who won't freak out and have control to take it easy and gradually go harder as you get better) I've been fine.

So as you can see, some people will get injuries, others wont. It's a risk of boxing, and if you can't handle that it's not the sport for you. To reduce the risk, don't spar before you feel comfortable that you can defend yourself, and don't go in there with people that are going to try and take your head off, becuase that's when you get hurt and you don't learn anything. Hard sparring like that is good when you are more experienced, but not when you're just starting out.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Hopefully, you'll be sparring with 16oz gloves that provide more padding. If you're extremely worried about it, they make headgear that protect the nose and face. Some peoples noses are more prone to breaking than others. As far as the mothpiece goes, if you got one from the dentist, that's probably the best. I have a cheap one that I molded to my teeth and have taken some viscous shots without having any problems.
