MMAweekly.com has confirmed that Couture vs Belfort III will take place at UFC 49
Yesterday, during an interview conducted by MMAWeekly’s Mick Hammond, Randy Couture confirmed that he will finally get his rematch with Vitor Belfort at UFC 49 on August 21st. He was told by the UFC, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s schedule confirms, that the rematch will take place at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, marking the first time the UFC has used that venue since November of 2002 when Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock squared off.
Couture and Belfort first squared off in the Octagon at UFC 15 in October of 1997, where Couture overwhelmed Belfort and finished the fight in a flurry of punches. They faced each other again, over six years later, at UFC 46. This time things fell Belfort’s way as his glove grazed across Couture’s eye, not landing flush, but causing a freak cut to Couture’s eyelid and an eye abrasion which caused a TKO stoppage in Belfort’s favor.
Couture’s eye is now fully healed and he’s anxious to get back in the ring. “My eye is 100% back to normal. In fact, I was back training two weeks after the injury… there was no permanent damage,” said Couture.
Although many rumors had Belfort defecting from the UFC for Pride or K-1, it appears that those rumors would be false. Despite a trying year in which Belfort has had to face the trials of his sister’s disappearance (she has yet to be found) and the uproar over the way he won the title from Couture, he has stepped up to the plate.
Couture, for one, is appreciative. “I thank Vitor for stepping up and signing to fighting me. I look forward to another great UFC and to finally settling the score between Vitor and myself."
