Default Gloves for Speed?

So I apologize for asking this question as I am sure it has come up before.

Alright, here's the scoop. Right now when I workout, I use 16oz training gloves for everything - mitts, heavy bag, sparring. The idea behind that was that I could build up my stamina using the heavier gloves. However, recently I read that if you want to improve hand speed, you should use lighter gloves - like bag gloves. Right now my hand speed is pretty much non-existent. What are your thoughts on this? I'd like to get another pair of gloves anyways because I don't think it's good for the padding of my gloves to be wearing them down so much and then sparring in them. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry, I feel I need to clarify. Obviously switching from 160z to 12 oz gloves will allow me to punch faster because there is less weight on my hands. What I meant to say is that will TRAINING in lighter gloves help increase handspeed?

Id say get a pair of 18 or 20oz and use those for everything to build ur speed a little bit, use the 16s for sparing. Also you should shadow box with light weights, like 3 lbs. Do several rounds of that a day.

And, you should do at least a few minutes a day of fast (NOT hard) hitting the heavy bag in the same place. Stand in one spot and just keep punching fast fast fast. That will help develop your speed.

Hope that helps.

I bought the TITLE power weighted gloves. The gloves are 12 oz but they have 4 1lb weights in each glove. So each glove weighs almost 5 lbs.

The built up my endurance mostly and my speed a lil bit. I was having alot of trouble keeping my hands up during sparring/fights. But these gloves really helped.

Endurance can sometimes be a factor of speed (poor sentence... :S). If you can throw a couple quick punches but slow down pretty quick then you need more endurance and your "speed" (average speed) will increase. Light gloves let you punch faster (only because their lighter) but don't really build up handspeed like slightly heavier gloves/dumbells do. However your technique could improve which could improve your speed. Hope that helped. Probably not.

i am not a supporter of weighted punching. it builds bad habits.

but, i agree with much of what landon wrote.

honestly, get your body to relax and use that other part of your brain to hardwire your movements.

so, we are only talking about linear speed, right?

Shadow box with 2 of 5lb weights. Spar with the biggest gloves you can find.

On the bag you'll ruin/rip the good spaaring gloves. The heavy bag is more for building power than speed, but you can still work up to a good speed with the bag gloves.

If speed doesn't come easily, remember fighters like Monzon were slow but seemed fast because of their accuracy. You can improve your accuracy on the speed bag and the vertical bag. Good luck!
