heys guys, i just bought one of those brain pad mouthguards cuz i can't afford to go to the dentist and get one fitted yet but i was just wondering, the brain pad is guarded on top AND bottom to help with gettin knocked out they say but whenever i see the pros, their special fitted one just clinches around the top of your teeth...why do they use a single guard?

Maybe they're better at slipping.

Whatever the pros use, you are far, far better off with a one-piece mouthguard that holds your lower jaw forward. It's not your teeth that are the issue; it's the lower joint of your jaw, which when hit with a straight punch is a major source of concussion and knockout in amateur boxing; the rear of your jaw slams against the base of your skull, causing concussion and, in many cases, unconsciousness.

From Cnet.com:

The impact site for a large number of brain concussions in sports is the lower jaw or chin. Since 1989, tens of thousands of Jaw-Joint Protectors have been tested and used by athletes in all contact sports. Its performance in the prevention of brain concussions has been phenomenal.

Through its patented design, the lower jaw is locked in a down and forward position separating the bones of the jaw joint space or TMJ. Though overlooked, the jaw joint provides direct access to the brain, but the Protectors' repositioning of the lower jaw creates a safety space that prohibits the jawbones from slamming into the base of the skull and brain.

I don't believe the exaggerated claims made by the manufacturers of these new mouth guards.

The three primary postulates of defense are chin down, guard up and move your head. If you follow these then you have a good chance of never having to find out strong your chin is. It does not matter how good your mouth guard is, if you take a direct it to the forehead from Edison Miranda, your head will snap back and you will most likely get a concussion. If he hits your chin it, you will be taking a nap on the canvass. Surviving Edison Miranda comes from good defensive skills not from some gadget you stick in your mouth.

By the way you should assume every opponent hits like Miranda, that way you may still have your faculties once your boxing career is over.
