  • Arthur Mercante Sr interview

The great referee was only paid a pittance to referee the Fight of the Century which he did a good job in. I remember seeing Mercante in Atlantic City, where he was working the weekend as a ref for a Lennox Lewis fight vs I think Phil Jackson or Tommy Morrison. I saw him strutting down the boardwalk in the middle of the afternoon the day before the fight, arm and arm with a gorgeous drop dead black prostitute dressed to the hilt in a red body suit, high heels, the works. Mercante was about 60 years old at the time lol

60 isn't that old...good for him. And yes, $750 may be peanuts, but he didn't sound bitter to be the third man in one of the most important fights of our lifetime. Love his take on fighters. Doesn't sound enthralled by any generation over the next, just what he's seen. Great ref and a class act! Thanks for posting!

Yes Arthur Mercante was a class act from head to toe. We didn't get a lot of chances to hear his thoughts on boxing but they were very important and interesting. This interview adds to his legacy and good memory.

One of the all time greats. He sure beats Tony Weeks.
