  • Comments Thread For: Lamont Peterson, Adrien Broner: Review, Ratings Update

It’s been an intriguing couple of weeks at the title level.

The pre-fight report card for Adrien Broner-Gavin Rees predicted the fight looked “like an appearance, will play out as a showcase, and likely end with a stoppage sometime between the sixth and eighth rounds.”

Rees almost got to the sixth round.

Rees, a former titlist at 140 lbs., showed up to fight on Saturday and gave it all he had. It wasn’t enough. No one expected it to be. It still ended up more fight than showcase by the end because Rees fought like he wanted to win.

Broner did too and the gap in talent was far too much. Broner has become boxing’s clown prince of petulance outside the ring and, given to showboating, often in the ring as well. Over the next couple years, we will see if he can also fulfill what many think will be a career worthy of a king.

Rees did well until he got into a fight. His head movement and upper body movement, obviously something worked on in the gym, were excellent rounds 1 and 2. Then the fight really started and he threw it all out the window and started leaping in or standing in front of Broner, and Broner took over.

Rees has never had the patience or focus to be a top top fighter. He obviously has some of the abilities required, but can't integrate and maintain them over a 12 round fight. He fought the first 2 rounds like he needed to all 12, but the 3rd round was terrible and it was him making mistakes and not Broner forcing them. If all Broner had to do to throw Rees off his gameplan was to take a step back, then Rees was never in it.

How can you have Broners defence improved when he got hit all the time? If Rees would have had any power Broner would have had a black eye.

That was due to Broner's step back counter left hook, once Broner had his timing down and adjusted the arch of his punches for the smaller man, it was all over.
