The sport was a on a huge high in the mid-90s. There were several huge heavyweight events every years, never mind the one that we pray for these days.

But then in December 96, the Bowe-Golota rematch ended with that three punch combination to the balls that saw Golota DQ'd, again!

In February 97, McCall has a complete meltdown in his rematch with Lewis.

And in June 97, Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfield's ear and essentially ended his own era as a great fighter.

Three farcical events and huge disappointments to the fans, almost back to back. This was a significant turning point for the division, and arguably for the sport in general. Oscar came along to pick up some of the slack. But the era of the heavyweight division having everyone's attention died.
