I surfed for almost 20 years of my life...i lived in hawaii, panama, and puerto rico. Learning is easy if you leave your expectations on the shore. Paddle out with someone who knows what they are doing. You can easily drown even if you are a good swimmer so be cautious of beaches that are known to have crazy riptides and undertow. I've rescued my share of fellow surfers and swimmers and I myself was saved from certain death once.
