His actions were understandable. After all, it's Communist China....prospects of a good life are dim.
Also, in a capitalistic society, suicide is not always exactly viewed as a bad thing. Of course nobody will outright say, "he did the honorable thing," but it's almost unspoken code if you fail, and become a burden on society, and your fellow industrialists, that you put yourself down.
Sometimes a man is worth more to his company, and to his family dead than alive.
