  • 30 for 30: 42-1 The James Buster Douglass story

Did anybody watch it last night. If you have a link post it. It's also available on ESPN +

ESPN did a great job. I like how they told his story & minimal from Tyson's side. And how they ended ur with the Tyson fight and didn't get into the Holyfield stuff. He became a punchline after the Holyfield fight but ESPN let him have his moment.

Buster was so focused and tuned in that night he probably could've beat Ali. He had everything working that night. Textbook how to box behind the jab. He removed his father from his camp before the fight. But after his mother passed he and his father's relationship improved. His father" a good boxer himself, told him before the fight to let his hands go and see what happens. He let those hands go in the first rd and he knew from that moment he could win that fight. The fight wasn't even close. That KD is probably the only round Tyson won. Fury getting up from that KD in the 12th was impressive but Buster getting up from that textbook uppercut from Tyson was probably more impressive. That punch had finished many men. If he'd stayed down nobody would've faulted him. But something got him up and he whooped Tyson ass the next rd & KO'd him the round after. Tyson also showed he had a hell of a chin. Douglass was landing some hellacious straight rights on the button

    Good post.
    Haven't seen it yet.

People can get more insight from the excellent book, The Last Great Fight.

Yeah it was good. Him beating Tyson was a good win, but definitely overhyped as Tyson was just a bum destroying hype job and anyone with a half decent jab and movement would likely beat him.

And Douglass had that jab working that night. Tyson couldn't get past it. And when he did manage right get past it Buster tied up or had that right hand waiting on him.

Tyson was not a hype job

Good 30 for 30. Wish they’d do more boxing

Douglas is a disgrace. All that glory yet he pissed it away by turning up like a fat **** in that pathetic effort V Holyfield.

The literal definition of a one hit wonder.

Outstanding post. A Great story that always should have been about Douglas instead of the fall of Tyson. The story is overcoming incredible odds, everything else is secondary. I've always said that on that ONE night Buster was one of the greatest heavyweights. Perfect performance. And how in the name of God did he actually get up again. ( he should have been counted out) but it was meant to be that he would win. On a side note Tyson showed great resiliency, he took big shots early and could have folded then especially with no corner. He showed heart too.

Has anyone found a dodgy source for this? It's not on in Australia until the 23rd.
