I am a Calzaghe fan and even admit he slapped. Slaps can hurt, but it's all about the technique and where it lands.
It wasn't the Knuckle part but the knuckle of the finger. He use to swing inwards with arm punches. In fact it breaks the rules unless you hit with the knuckle part of a closed fist.
He had more technique in terms of power early on, and had to adapt due to damaging his wrists and hands during his career. He couldn't even do press ups and didn't spar much later in his career due to the injuries...
