You become the face of the sport, like McGregor to MMA, by beating fighters like Rigondeaux. But Frampton refused to fight Rigondeaux so he's going to be a popular multiple division titlist that will make good to decent paydays during his streak. Nothing wrong with that, but it takes a special fighter to be a boxing icon as opposed to just another dude with a belt.

I know very little about MMA but aside from the trash talking, McGregor became the face of the sport by pushing his limits, fighting the best competition and taking the fights that hardcore MMA fans wanted to see. Once he got the hardcore fans on his side, his popularity transcended to the mainstream.

Frampton is the better fighter of the two. But he'll never be able to eclipse McGregor. McGregor's retirement tweet got more retweets than Kobe Bryant's retirement. Despite his loss to Diaz, McGregor is the biggest combat sports star in the world today. You can deny it all you want, but the numbers speak for themselves. It's not like McGregor hasn't earned his dues. He KOed the no.1 P4P fighter at the time in record fashion 13 seconds to claim the FW belt.

I don't even think that would do it.

MMA is just a much more popular sport. Especially among the 18-35 demo. It's more accessible than Boxing.

Frampton is not as big as either Fury or Mcgregor, let's be real.

The more countries like Mexico, Ireland, and England get involved in the sport, the better it'll be for boxing and especially the boxers. Somebody in this thread wote that McGregor's retirement tweet got more retweets than Kobe's retirement tweet? That's freakin' amazing!!

Gets support from hardcore boxing fans in the republic, not a mainstream sportstar yet though. It definitely isn't a divide thing though because Rory McIlroy is massive.

Katie Taylor is the biggest name in Irish boxing. The likes of Michael Conlon and Paddy Barnes (amateur boxers competing in the Olympics) are prob still bigger names in the Republic compared to Frampton too.

Boxing gets little to no coverage by the media over here unfortunately bar when the Olympics are on.

If they are Catholic they will say Ireland... If they are Protestant they consider themselves British. So with Frampton saying that about Tyson Fury "is he English or Irish? ", that means he's having a dig.

Frampton is just more diplomatic, but he's one of those who would say "I'm Irish and there is only one Ireland! ".

2 different sports, but no, McGregor has the better resume.

McGregor gets a lot of hate but his "ego" is pure gamesmanship he's not a Naseem Hamed or Adrien broner or ronda roysey who actually belive their own ****.

McGregor is basically an athlete playing a wwe caricature and that's what got him where he is
