Default Why can't moderate solutions to student debt ever be discussed?

On one hand, you've got the hardcore conservative side that says "screw those dumb millenials and Gen-Z kids, they're the ones who took out stupid college loans on liberals arts degrees just to become Starbucks baristas lol". Then you've got the leftist extreme viewpoint like Bernie's "Cancel all student loan debt. We'll just tax the billionaires a little more, rabble rabble rabble!"

I lean more towards the conservative view on that issue. However, it's a fact that predatory lending practices have long been enabled with student loans to get stupid high school kids who don't know any better to get neck deep in debts they'll spend up to decades trying to pay off. Call them stupid all you want, but letting it continue that way is eventually going to wreck havoc on the economy when these people need to live a tier or two beneath the means they'd otherwise have without insane student debt loans to pay off for so long. So that's bad for everyone.

Why not just find a compromise solution? For example, the government could acknowledge how screwed up the outrageous the interest rates have been on private student loans and mandate that the private loan companies offer more reasonable interest rate refiancing options to people who are in the constant cycle of barely paying off bs ~15% interest rates for decades. Then they'd actually have a means of eventually paying the debts off themselves without asking big brother government to step in and do it for them with other peoples' money. Plus, it would tremendously help the economy by enabling those people to start spending more on things besides their student loans for so much of lives. So everyone wins, except the loan companies don't get to enslave them for years on end like they planned on all along.

Also, make student loans subject to bankruptcy again. At least for private loans. There's no reason student loan lenders shouldn't be subject to the risks of investments going bad, just like any other investment loan that they hand out. Then they'd have to stop handing out massive loans to every moron who barely passed public high school to make it into any random college program for any stupid degree out there, meaning less people taking them on who can't pay them back, and better loans for those who can/should go to college.

Financial aid at public colleges is already pretty generous especially if you finish your first 2 years at community. If you're from a low-income household (or have hit age 23) you can break even or even get a little more than you need.

When you read about kids who graduate with "100k in debt" from a public university, that's money they spent on resort-style living. If you receive standard FAFSA which is I believe 5.5k per year and your public university is average (around 7k per year) then good golly you've gone into $6,000 of tuition debt! the horror!

Started at community? You have extra money left over.

Those shock figures are not for tuition or books. They took out large loans to live beyond the means while refusing to work because working would ruin the "best social years of their life".

I don't remember any 15% interest rates either... Between 3-5% depending on loan type, and only started accruing after graduation.

There's also the fact that there *needs* to be some degree of financial penalty, or everyone would just screw around on 6 years of welfare earning a womens/ethnic studies degree leading to no career. Because why not?

Totally depends on the school and whether you are in-state or out of state.

EG - for instate tuition, the most expensive is William & Mary which costs $22k per year
- for out of state tuition, the most expensive is University of Michigan which costs ~$50k/year

Also, normally the amount you can borrow is limited to what schools define as the cost of attendance - which includes tuition, housing, fees, books, health insurance and modest personal expenses. Government run student loans and financial aid services will refuse to pay more than the cost of attendance.

(Note though, that since some of these expenses are not billed by the school, students in some cases receive a remittance from the school. I did for one semester when I had more scholarship money than my previous terms. It was far from a fortune)

For private loans, might be a different story on what they will allow you to borrow and probably only if you have a worthy cosigner.

I had some student debt above 5%, and some of the loans began accruing interest immediately. But most of it was 3-5% as well and nothing in double digits.

How about you just pay back what you borrowed or at least not so much interest that you end up paying back twice what you borrowed. How about that? Make that illegal for banks and anyone else that give out these loans. Put a cap on interest rates, so they can't screw you.

And to answer the original question, because banks don't care. They wanna squeeze as much money out of you as possible. That's their job.

I basically did what you described in your first paragraph, I took out a small loan for a semester in the summer that wasn't covered, payed it off years ago.

Honestly if you're underemployed or unemployed there are alot of government programs that will fund your vocation training.

I think its a good investment for society to help its citizens learn new skills and get educated.

Talked to a kid yesterday that goes to UNR. He said if you're a resident in NV it's 7 k a year. That's not bad at all.

Problem is these kids want to go to fancy schools and don't want to pay back their loans.

There should be NO compromise at all! They signed for a LOAN! Pay it back your damn self! If I go take out a LOAN for a new Corvette, are people suppose to feel bad for me and pay off my LOAN too? Do you dumbasses not know the definition of LOAN? **** them. They should be thrown in jail for theft if they don't pay their own loan instead they're trying to steal from everyone to pay for their personal decision to WILLINGLY take out a LOAN.
