  • Virgil Hunter "If Andre Ward Fights Anthony Joshua I'll Keep A Towel In My Hand"

So Hunter is admitting he's ready to sacrifice Ward's career and give up his undefeated career for a payday.. He'll throw Warf in with AJ and just before AJ kills him he'll throw in the towel.

You're taking it the wrong way. He's saying he'll risk the fight, because it'll be the greatest accomplishment ever, but if it gets out of hand, he'll save Ward from permanent damage.

Basically, see how Ward does, but if he gets hurt in the slightest, and it looks like Ward bit off more than he can chew, he's gonna prevent any permanent damage, and just stop the fight.

I actually think that's BS. That's ripping the audience off, knowing there would be little chance of winning, so any sign of even possibly being hurt, and he's gonna throw in the towel.

One just needs to put these two men next to each other and realise what a nonsense this fight would be.

there is a photo of carl froch and aj training together - it serves as a nice comparison.

Virgil Hunter is, for all intents and purposes, Andre Ward's guardian; Ward was raised by his father, who put Virgil in his life to look after his son, and Virgil has kept to that from the moment that Andre was basically 10 years old.

With his life on the line, you bet your bottom dollar that Virgil will have no qualms in protecting Andre Ward, just as he would protect his own flesh and blood.

No different than Danny/Angel, Shawn/Kenny, JRock/Breadman, or any number of truly father/son-like relationships between fighter and trainer.

Exactly.. Thank that's what makes me even more surprised about this interview. He is basically saying he is willing to risk Wards health by putting him in against AJ even though he knows in the back of his mind Ward could get hurt real bad.

Why put your fighter in that much risk? Ward didn't ever think of fighting AJ, it's Hunter that told him he can beat AJ.. at first Ward thought that was a stupid move but Hunter has convinced him he can go up and beat him. Disappointed that Hunter would put his fighter in that much risk for some money.

This is the same guy that put Khan in with Canelo.. And after the fight he admitted in the back of his mind he knew Canelo was too big. That's disgusting, Virgil lost a lot of respect for this interview.. Khan is lucky he still has his bearings.. Just go watch how his head snaps back off the canvas when he gets KO'd.

He has 0% chance to win.

Literally there is no possible chance.

Stay away from the heavyweight division.

He seems to earnestly believe that he sees something in Joshua's still developing style that he believes that he and Ward can exploit to victory; if things start going bad (or Joshua figures out a way to tighten whatever hole exists), Andre would still be in the ring with a 6'6, 240lb, big punching man and Virgil will protect his fighter accordingly.

For all the talk that the explosion of the finish generated, Amir Khan was more than in the fight against Alvarez (the tide had started to turn, but Khan easily took the first two rounds, and possibly the next two too, depending on how you scored it); Amir Khan wanted the fight, Virgil didn't really want the fight, but he did the work and help give Amir Khan the tools/plan required to win the fight. Amir Khan was Amir Khan (after keeping to the plan perfectly for the first two rounds, his focus started to lapse, his old habits of admiring his handspeed started to come back, and he ended up falling into a trap), but it's not like he was there taking an extended beating (having that hair-trigger chin has likely saved much of Khan's life, post-boxing, largely because he's never taken the type of beating that ruins fighters).

Virgil Hunter is never going to let his fighter take an extended beating in a fight (working with Angulo, Virgil gave him more leeway due to his toughness, but the moment Virgil saw that Angulo was no longer in the fight, he pulled him), and that's likely doubly true for his godson.

He and Andre would prepare for the fight, get the weight on right, make sure the tactics are sharp, show up on fight night, with Virgil Hunter having no qualms in his mind or heart with any undefeated streak if it meant protecting his son.

If Anthony Joshua walks out of the corner and blasts Andre Ward in the first round, and Ward doesn't respond in a way that Virgil likes, Virgil would stop it in 30 seconds if need be.

A 240lb man hitting a 200-205lb man with one punch isn't the end of the world, so not sure why you're talking about the matchup as if it's Anthony Joshua fighting Manny Pacquiao.

Evander Holyfield fought as a heavyweight, for basically his entire run, at basically 210lbs.

Andre Ward, fight fit and fully hydrated/fed, is likely at 185-190lbs.

He's never going to be a giant, but if he can get the weight up the right way (10-15lbs of good bulk to deal with the heavier opponents), to say a guy with Ward's level of skill would have no chance is utterly ridiculous.

This is wards only shot at a huge payday. He knows freakshows sell, look ar floyd vs conor its, going to sell.

Pacquiaos novelty was how this small guy beat up bigger men.

Ward will be in a david vs goliath fight, and win lose or draw he retires with well over 35 million in the ban from that fight. They will title it battle of the undefeateds and push the david vs goliath angle, if ward wins he will be a legend and a draw. Ward will be super huge. It takes great risks like this to be a star if you dont play the bad guy trash talker.

I could see ward vs joshua doing like two million ppv buys in the states and huge numbers in uk and overseas.

                    Freakshows sell.
