      1. Germany is paying reparations directly to Israel for Jews impacted by WWII who decided to move to Israel, on top of the reparations they are paying to the individuals themselves.

      2. An immigrant who moves to Germany post 1945 cant tell the government that they should not be paying for the crimes of the Nazi party. What kind of sense would that make?

        1. No they aren't, Germany initially helped pay for the resettlement of Jews to Israel in the 50's and 60's, but after that the only payments going to Israel is to accommodate the direct survivors of the holocaust. They don't give the Israeli government money just because, that money is used to pay the surviving individuals and that's it. Unless you have some information or sources I don't, feel free to post them.

        2. Yes, you are correct, but the difference is Germany's reparations will end once every jew who was directly affected by the holocaust dies, they won't be paying out money to their descendants 5 generations removed. And second Germany is not a country of immigrants, USA is. There is a collective responsibility in Germany for the atrocities of WW2 since 90% of the Germany's grand parents or great grand parents participated in WWII, who on the other hand in the USA can you point to and say these folks grand parents or great parents participated in slavery?

I’ll tell you who should pay the Africans who captured and sold the slaves. The reparations should go to the many West Africans who are bitter to this day about their ancestors who were taken by fellow blacks to be sold. How about the Democrats who made it legal. There is a fine study by the university of Ghana where they put Huge responsibility on fellow blacks for slavery. This is maybe the beginning of black on black crime.Africans were practicing slavery for centuries before the USA became involved.Slavery exists in Africa to this day.You might say Africa is one of the founding fathers of slavery.

What always seems to be misunderstood here is that reparations for American slavery is NOT about making YOU pay money for what your ancestors did to slaves. It is about the United States Government, the very one that exists today, making amends for the wrongs that it perpetrated against African and Black American slaves. People who were forced into free labor (amongst other atrocities like being stripped of their land and being subjected to discriminatory laws) and whose ancestors were not allowed to inherit the fruits of their labor either via money or land, while America benefited greatly from slave labor and was built on slave labor. The key is that not only were slaves robbed of the fruits of their labor, but they were unable to pass it down to their progeny.

Citizens of America share its burden, as is part of the social contract that citizens have with this nation. We enjoy the benefits of being a citizen, we accept the burdens--which is why we pay taxes. Reparations has been paid by America in the past, but for some reason this one gets people uptight.

First of all, the problem with this is that Africans who sold slaves largely did so due to coercion.

Second, the importation of slaves from Africa into America was banned in something like 1808. So what of the slaves that were American bred thereafter?

Is your point merely that slavery was a long time ago?

America has paid reparations before, and the date of the atrocity apparently hasn't been a concern. It's not so hard to find precedent here.

But something interesting to think about: Blacks in America have been enslaved for longer than they have been free. And it's even crazier to think that the Civil Rights Movement was only 54 years ago.

                  1. You are correct, Israel recently asked for additional payments but didnt get it.

                  2. It doesn't matter the percentage of immigrants, the principal remains the same. Immigrants cant around and say they only want to enjoy the benefits but none of the burdens of their new country.

What I find odd is the Republican fanboys don't seem to be on board with reparations....

You know...since they love to say that the Republicans freed the slaves and are for minorities, etc etc.

They would know that the original 40 acres thing came from a Republican, and it was Republicans who were trying to push through reparations...only for a Democrat to stop it in its tracks.

But seems they don't want to stick with their party on this one. Hmmm.

An argument about slavery absolutely has to take time into account, otherwise whats stopping modern day Jews from claiming reparations from the Egyptians

The precedent of paying reparations by USA has always been to those directly affected by mistreatment, so yes time did play a role. Whether it was to the Japanese who were put in interment camps, or displaced Native American tribes who lost their land. Even in the case of Chicago police torturing its black prisoners they received direct reparations totaling to over $5 million.

But something interesting to think about: Blacks in America have been enslaved for longer than they have been free. And it's even crazier to think that the Civil Rights Movement was only 54 years ago.
Difference is you're not a slave nor were you ever a slave, so what entitles you to reparations for the sufferings of your ancestors by people who 1 never owned slaves, and 2 emigrated here long after slavery.
