There's a difference between strength training and bodybuilding too. Most people who lift weights do it like a body builder would.

A good strength and conditioning coach can do wonders for a boxers physical fitness if that's an area that is lacking. It only seems like boxing that has this odd hang up about adopting modern training methods while every other sport has taken on these new methods and seen their athletes reach levels previously not reached in their sports.
