TBRB should be the future, since Ring lost some legitimacy when Golden Boy Promotions took control of the magazine. Although, the prominent ones at heavy, light heavy, don't seem to be undeserving. Probably also middle, light and welter, but I don't watch enough boxing these days to know 100%, which is why I often defer to the historians on here.

Not sure if it's the exact reason, but back then if you held a belt other organizations wouldn't rank you. That could hurt your earning potential for a guy that's not a draw.

It was for the very simple reason of making more money. You see, when Mercer won the title and then beat Morrison, the WBO still meant nothing. It was later in the decade when the belt started to hold some legitimacy. During Mercer's run, Moorer was made mandatory challenger by the WBO and yet, Mercer was in a position to line up a fight with Holmes (big money, supposedly no risk) and then fight top dog Holyfield.
So, rather then pay step aside money or fight a mandatory, he just gave up the title for his hopes of fighting for the real championship. In the end, Holmes somehow beat him and that w as that.
