Is Andre Ward in many ways a poor man's Floyd Mayweather Jr

He's a poor man's Hopkins, and Floyd is wayy better than both, especially on the offensive end. Floyd knew when to throw a punch, and he could do some damage.

Exactly how I think about this. Ward was brilliant as was Hopkins in his prime but Mayweather was on another level. Those guys had great boxing IQs but Floyd was the smartest and most skilled boxer of all time. He knew everything from when you were gonna punch to when to attack you and when to make you attack. Plus his defence was unmatched by anyone. He made several great HOF fighters look like amateurs.

Both guys are tactical fighters, both are cautious and defensive minded. Neither guy is known for combination punching and both guys use the clinch to stop the flow of the action. Both have good chins and are strong on the inside. Both fighters used superior conditioning to wear there opponents down.
I wouldn't call Ward a poor man's Mayweather because despite the fact that both guys are defensive minded, Ward's fights were wars of attrition, with Andre smothering the other fighter, whereas Floyd relied on foot speed, ring generalship and counter punching in his fights.

They are completely different fighters in terms of style. Floyd is more athletic and has the better natural ability...in a way ward is a bit of an over achiever, he's definitely got more dog in him than Floyd. As far as being that clear p4p #1 guy and holding it down, yes he's a poor mans mayweather. There were certain fans that desperately wanted ward to be that guy...which is why they overrated his talent and opposition.
