James Jeffries' offer to Jack Johnson

Johnson publically asked Jeffries for a title shot. No much different than modern examples such as Erislandy Lara showing up at a Canelo post fight press conference to ask for a fight.

The difference is Canelo actually agreed to fight Lara. Jeffries never gave Johnson his title shot.

Yeah. It's kind of strange to see a fighter receive accolades for blatantly ducking a fight. That's no different from a modern fighter telling a challenger "I won't give you a shot but we can fight in a bar." Can you imagine if the heavyweight champion did that today?



The only thing that matters historically is once they did fight Jeffries was humiliated to the point that he claimed that he never could have beaten Johnson at any point in his career. This is prize fighting not cellar brawling which means absolutely nothing in the profession of boxing. There is no honor in what Jeffries did.
