  • [PLEASE HELP] Why are Chinese fishermen destroying coral reefs in the South China Sea?

"In every direction the destruction stretched for hundreds of metres, piles and piles of shattered white coral branches."

    http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35106631

What I came across on a reef far out in the middle of the South China Sea has left me shocked and confused.

I'd been told that Chinese fishermen were deliberately destroying reefs near a group of Philippine-controlled atolls in the Spratly Islands but I was not convinced.

"It goes on day and night, month after month," a Filipino mayor told me on the island of Palawan.

"They are punishing us by destroying our reefs."

China going to China. They're destroying the natural habitat of the fish by destroying the coral reefs, they're stealing clams worth tons of money, and are also poaching sea turtles.

    Fu.ck them.

As long as there is demand poachers and others will risk life and limb to indiscriminately destroy habitat for profit. All they care about is the money, and their customers don't care where the products come from as long as they get them.

Because they want to feed their families and if they don't catch the fish or harvest the coral their kids go hungry. This is why recycling in first world countries is a joke. We can never stop the output of developing countries no matter what hipster countermeasures we put in place to make ourselves feel better.

This is why human reproduction is the most destructive scourge against this planet imaginable. The more people there are the greater demand on Earth's limited resources. It's good that these "hardworking" and more than likely illiterate shlubs have the opportunity to feed their families, unfortunately it comes at the expense of all future generations.

“The green revolution has won a temporary success in man’s war against hunger and deprivation; it has given man a breathing space. If fully implemented, the revolution can provide sufficient food for sustenance during the next three decades. But the frightening power of human reproduction must also be curbed; otherwise the success of the green revolution will be ephemeral only…Most people still fail to comprehend the magnitude and menace of the ‘Population Monster’."

"There can be no permanent progress in the battle against hunger until the agencies that fight for increased food production and those that fight for population control unite in a common effort.” -Norman Borlaug

What do you say to those organizations who want to feed/clothe/shelter children in third world countries? In Boston, and in major cities I suspect, there are these organizations who's employees frequently solicit people on the street for donations to these types of charities. They usually show you a picture of some vulnerable child and then ask for a monthly donation or what not
