Trump Inflates U.S. Economic Achievements From Jobs to Wages

President Donald Trump inflated his economic achievements during his State of the Union address, touting numbers that don’t match up with official data and highlighting some accomplishments that left out key context.

Trump said the U.S. has created 5.3 million jobs and 600,000 in manufacturing since the election in 2016. While the overall job figure matches up, Labor Department figures show the correct figure for factories is 481,000, the difference between January 2019 payrolls and November 2016.

The president also said that wages “are rising at the fastest pace in decades,” according to his prepared remarks. In fact, wages are rising at the fastest pace in just under one decade, according to the widely cited measure of average hourly earnings from the Labor Department. Another gauge, the employment cost index, rose 2.9 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier, the most since 2008.

Here is a flipside to this:

Manufacturers Added 6 Times More Jobs Under Trump Than Under Obama's Last 2 Years

Since Pres. Trump took office in January 2017, employment in manufacturing has increased 3.7%. Over the same period during the last two years under Pres. Obama, manufacturing payrolls grew by only 0.6%.

The sluggish growth in manufacturing in the latter half of the Obama years led to President Obama remarking in June 2016 that manufacturing jobs “are just not going to come back.”

Weeks after Trump’s election—and in response to candidate Trump’s promise to bring back manufacturing jobs—New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, an economist, said, “Nothing policy can do will bring back those lost jobs. The service sector is the future of work; but nobody wants to hear it.”

Trump’s deregulatory and tax policies have confounded his critics and benefited the American worker.

Wages in Manufacturing in the United States decreased to 21.86 USD/Hour in January from 21.91 USD/Hour in December of 2018. Wages in Manufacturing in the United States averaged 9.33 USD/Hour from 1950 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 21.91 USD/Hour in December of 2018 and a record low of 1.27 USD/Hour in February of 1950.

Manufacturing jobs today are not like years ago. You can't support a family because the cost of living far exceeds the wages earned. So you either have to get an additional PT job or your spouse has to work as well.

we haven't for a long time. My point is manufacturing jobs used to be able to support a family in certain parts of the US. That clearly isn't the case anymore.

Cmon Dunn this is sad. Theres a lot of jobs that USE to be able to support a family. How people do you know where one person is working in the household anymore no matter what job they have?

Why is it sad? Because it's factual?

I know Plenty. I live in a suburb 17 miles west of the city. About 30-35% of the kids in my kids schools have 2 parent families with one income. Of course that one income is in the multiple hundreds of thousands per year in office jobs not manufacturing.

The middle class taxes barely pays their own way. I don't know how you all think you're being ripped off by welfare etc.

The rich pay that, at least they used to, now the Chinese do and the Middle class will hvve to pay it back.

No chit huh? Someone making six figures has one parent working? Wow that amazing. How many people make that kind of coin ?
Stats show that 62% of households have BOTH parents working.

You do realize that not everyone can make six figures right?
