Looks and body shape go hand in hand with social status, because it elevates you above others/the norm, so women may not be overly bothered by looks (they still are to a large degree just not as much as us) but the fact that you are higher up because of them adds to the attractiveness of getting in shape etc,(its become popular to be good looking and in shape higher status now more than ever) also thats why good looking guys get rejected if they seek validation too much.
