        • We have seen the same thing happen in Australia btw

GMH, Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc used to manufacture here but all have gone or are in the process of shutting down as the industry is not competitive e.g. average worker was being paid $80k whereas workers in Asia are paid 10k

Gov't spent billions to subsidize auto makers over the years, finally had enough and decided that money was better spent re-training workers/establishing industries that were sustainable

          • Thanks.

Your source showed how US workers in 'right to work' States are paid less than union guys. That's a big factor here. Notice all the foreign car factories are in RTW States. Is that a factor in Australia too?

              Yes and no.

Certain aspects of all employment contracts are covered by Federal legislation e.g. right to hire, fire and retirement entitlements

However, wage rates and entitlements are generally negotiated on an industry or even individual employer basis with consideration sometimes given to the location of the business but as we are a relatively small market, the chances of such disparities in wages between states existing for too long is not high

Anyway, Australia's unions used to be very militant but fortunately those days seem to be largely behind us and many are reasonably pragmatic i.e. no point negotiating a position that sends the company to the wall

There are also very tough Federal laws in place that prevent unions from attempting to blackmail employers with frivolous strike actions
