"Although the 97 percent pro-statehood vote has been touted as near-unanimous support, turnout for the Puerto Rico referendum was abysmal. Fewer than a quarter of all voters voted at all, after a controversy regarding Department of Justice certification of the ballot questions led to charges of corruption and a mass boycott among opposition parties."
I’ll read it, but what do you think is the best for the common man, not corrupt politicians. Politicians are corrupt by nature. Our leaders are garbage. Thieves all of them! If they didn’t start out thieving, they will get to stealing real quick.

for puerto rico the options are terrible. it can either let the US finish it off or else seek independence. statehood isnt a realistic option.

the thing is the puerto rican people know that independence will lead to chaos since itll be just like haiti after the french. and now that the seed of corruption has been implanted and spread thoroughly in puerto rican culture as a whole, the island would be stuck with an internal monster if it were ever to become its own country. itd be just another haiti. so thats why puerto ricans dont favor it.

there is no good option, just suffering. even if puerto ricans were to want independence, the US would never grant it, just like itd never grant statehood. having a modern colony dealing in real US dollars is too much of a good ride to give up any time soon. maybe once all the moneys run out theyd kick the island out but not until then.

news of trumps mockery of rossello's begging for statehood made the news on the island and thats why rossello's ppl are trying to save face by introducing this bill. pathetic
But at this point, does PR really have a choice?

It’s a no win scenario it seems. If I were a **** head corrupt politician, I’d hire all my friends to build up the infrastructure and take kickbacks.

Even now, here in Japan, politicians are getting rich influencing which construction companies can be allowed to bid on big billion dollar projects. Many of the builders have already cut deals with each other, so everyone gets a nice piece of the pie. It’ll happen there too.

Corruption is legal. It isn’t, but it really is legal if nothing is done about it.

a choice of what though? rossello is begging for statehood to save his own candidacy from the impending backlash once voting season comes around. it is not because he actually thinks theyd grant it. trump laughed and mocked him to his face in that video. puerto rico has no choices really. whatever the politicians do, they do only for themselves

Long over due, atleast now we can take a bigger control of their financial situation and straighten things out. The bad, obviously is that these people are overwhelmingly Democrat, which means 3 more electoral votes for team D.

That's kinda the thing though, hes really left with no other option than to beg. This feeds into Trumps ego and he'll call it winning. Having PR beg than Trump coming to the rescue only makes him look better. He may even turn PR red depending how he goes about it.

The only sensible thing to do is give PR independence and let them sink on their own.

Naa, we make the USA a boatload of money despite what they invest in the island.

I wouldn't vote for independence, if the USA decides to let PR go, I might bail.
