  • This board is full of idiots.

We don't know how many people are infected in America as there's only 5 tests per 1 million people.

There could be hundreds of thousands of people with it right now with a virus that spreads easier than the flu that kills 21% of people over 60.

A lot of you subscribe to the Trump logic of people can't be sick if they're not tested.

Which part is bull****. The numbers are the numbers. Italy's confirmed cases rose 4964 in 24 hours to 15,113. That's roughly a 50% jump in a day. If it increases the same amount on Friday, that's 20,000. It's gone from 10k to 20k in two days. That's an exponential increase every two days. 1000 are dead in Italy. It takes time to die from the virus. These are people who caught it weeks ago. Let's guess the mortality rate is 2%. That means two weeks ago there must have been 50 x 1000 with it in Italy. That's 50,000 two weeks ago. So extrapolate and think how many actually have it right now.

There is nothing to suggest things will play out any differently in the US.

US confirmed cases were just under 1000 on Wednesday. On Thursday they are 1679. Wednesday's 1000 will easily be more than 2000 come Friday.

Meanwhile 40 people are dead in the US. Once again, if the mortality rate is 2%, this suggests 50 x 40 = 2000 had it a few weeks ago. If we assume that number doubled every two days over the last two weeks, it suggest there might possibly be something like 250k people with it in actuality.

You’re not wrong. The world is losing its collective mind. This is not Ebola, it’s a ****ing flu virus. We are going to spend a gazillion dollars and put our lives on hold for absolutely no logical reason. This **** cannot be contained. The worlds leaders will eventually admit this- maybe in a month, maybe more, but we won’t learn a damn thing from it. A year from now we will again be declaring the end times because of a new flu outbreak. God help the masses.

Or you can do it the Italian way -- shut things down bit by bit in sequence, thus allowing the virus to continue to spread exponentially.

Cases are exploding. The US doesn't even have enough kits to test people properly. The true number of cases is likely 10 or 20 times higher than the confirmed cases.

If you are crazy enough to shut down nothing, then it spreads exponentiallly every couple of days. Today's 100,000 confirmed cases will be 200,000 by Saturday, and then 400,000 on Monday... and in just one week it's up to well over a million. Another week later, it's maybe 10 million. A week after that, it's maybe 100 million. And so on.

            20% of people need hospitalisation.

How many hospital beds do you think there are available at once?

You will see what they had in Wuhan before they contained it -- people lying in hospital corridors, unattended.

The mortality rate will be worse if the health system collapses.

With the current mortality rate of 3.4%, you are talking millions dead if you let it spread without restriction.
You are an unmitigated fool to think this can be contained...a true, staggering idiot.

I know, I hate it man... as you said, it does appear easily spreadable...but at the same time, rather harmless to virtually anyone who gets it...stopping everything and spending tons of money seems like it does more harm than good to me.

I think the situation aboard the Grand Princess...where in a confined setting, 2400+ passengers were exposed to the virus...and only man elderly man died...shows that it is essentially the flu.

                    Yeah good luck with that.
The Chinese government is cutthroat, merciless and would eat your ass for breakfast (along with lots of more disgusting shi_te) in court.

The spread can be slowed, the impact mitigated. It is not only a question of containment but of trying to avoid a massive population requiring medical attention in a narrow space of time, which will overload the health system.

You can call me an idiot, but the cold hard facts show that China, which adopted a more forceful, more rapid response, has just a handful of new cases of each day whereas Italy, with a less rapid response, is still seeing new cases at a frightening rate.

A graph of China's cases by time shows the number levelling out, corresponding to when they shut down Wuhan. A graph of Italy's cases is an exponential curve. The pace of infections is picking up.

We know by and large how it is transmitted. It's not beyond the ken of man to mitigate the spread of a disease when you know how it is transmitted.
