An amateur base can be a HUGE asset to a pro fighter. Now, I admit I don't train my fighters in the "amateur" style, I train them in the pro style. Saying that, there have been fighters who had no amateur fights be successful in the pros' and some who haven't.
So I don't think there's a definitive answer either way. It really depends on the fighter and individual. A guy like Margarito I think lost his first 4 out of 6 fights and went on to be a world champ.
There have been tremendous amateurs who didn't live up to the hype, but IMO the amateurs are a good base from which to start. It gives you experience and teaches you the fundamentals which many pro's lack.
