  • Virgil Hill: an appreciation

Now let's hear it for this man. A man who was one of the ultimate boxing technicians of his time; a man who would fight ANYWHERE on earth and could still win and big. He wasn't afraid of fighting in Germany, unlike some other American *******! He beat the most popular and best German fighter of the 90's, Henry Maske, in his own backyard. Quicksilver had a great jab and movement, that circle technique. Even Hearns struggled to establish his jab against him. Some will say he was short on power, but he stopped renowned and tough Frenchman Fabrice Tiozzo in one round, in 2000, at 36. He also knocked out James Kinchen in one round, don't remember the exact year. Kinchen went 15 rounds with Hearns in a very close fight and lost by MD.

And yet...he is rarely mentioned on sites as these. There are very few of his fights to be found on youtube or dailymotion or other boxing video sites. I wonder why. Ok, he did get knocked out by Roy Jones, altho nobody could withstand that kind of punch. It's considered one of Jones' ultimate knockouts and he was at his peak then. He did fight a lot in North Dakota, his homestate. But that was before he really became famous. It is really a tragedy that his last fight is not just a loss, but that he also got busted for doping. He tried to keep up at 43 and I guess he just didn't wanna quit yet.

But that still doesn't change the fact that he is a five time champion, in two different divisions. Three times in LHW and two time cruiserweight. And he won a silver medal in the '84 Olympics and was stopped only twice in the course of a 23 year career. Going out with a respectable 50-7 record.

Virgil "Quicksilver" Hill beat Bobby Czyz, Henry Maske, Frank Tate, Leslie Stewart, Donny Lalonde, James Kinchen, Lottie Mwale, Fabrice Tiozzo, Adolpho Wasgington, Marvin Camel, Saul Montana, Tyrone Frazier, Crawford Ashley, Drake Thadzi, Lou Del Valle
