  • Comments Thread For: Don King Calls For Cease and Desist On WBC-Sanctioned Makabu-Cieslak Fight

Three months after promising to deliver a hometown fight for his most recent signee, Hall of Fame promoter Don King has now taken steps to block such an event. A cease and desist letter from Don King Productions (DKP)_has been issued to the World Boxing Council (WBC), whom the Florida based promotional company claims has sanctioned a title fight involving Ilunga Junior' Makabu without its knowledge or consent.

Seems really strange that there is supposedly a fight in two weeks.

Not sure what happened with Makabu. If he accepted some sort of deal behind King's back or what went on.

King should win this one if what I am reading is right.

Perhaps Makabu didn't understand what he signed up for and didn't know he was in violation of his legal contract.

Whose idea was that? Signing with king in 2019, smh. Maybe TV in Congo is still showing big U.S fights from the 90s so people think Don King is still the men.
I agree it does seem rather shocking that anyone would sign with him nowadays. The only guy he has given a push to the last 5 years is Eric Molina for some reason. Stiverne, B.J Flores, Trevor Bryan & Mark De Mori were & have been all very inactive under the Don King banner. Flores & De Mori were both released from their contracts as part of their deal was they would get a title shot which didn't materialize so both actually split on good terms surprisingly. Bryan needed an opponent so King brought Flores back in & got him his shot. Bryan fights once every 12-18 months. He has a high ranking in the WBA. His career is wasting away under DKP. Makabu's career is about to hit a road block...

In this day and age, cash advances still work.

It would be a shame to see Makabu on the shelf. He's a nice fighter with plenty of power, skill, and grit despite the Bellew fight.

Most of King's fighters aren't exactly top notch nowadays and Stiverne actually got paid for doing nothing and a shot at the title for simply eating.

The longer this drags out, the longer Charr vs Bryan drags out as the whole point of Rumble in the Jungle II is to have a world heavyweight title fight on the show as well as a Congo fighter in a world title fight.

Meanwhile, Fres Oquendo's lawsuit against Charr continues to take forever.

The WBA world heavyweight title hasn't been defended in over two years, with nothing in sight.

Fres Oquendo hasn't fought in five and a half years and is still entitled to a WBA world heavyweight title fight.

That is right. I forgot he got like 500000 to step aside at one point...

You are right he still wants his shot & was cleared by Illinois commission to fight. He wants his 325000 he is owed for Charr failing test & his title shot. I thought this was settled & he just retired. He has won several court cases since the Chagaev fight. This would be 2 purses he has got without fighting if he gets his $325000 from Team Charr. It was in the contract if Charr failed a test Fres would get his purse regardless if the fight happened or not. I think it was $950000 he got in the lawsuit over the Chagaev rematch fiasco...

He's still shown he can get guys to the #1 spot in the WBA or WBC. Trevor Bryan, Vanes, Amir Imam, etc.

If you're a fighter with no other promoter or manager courting you that has the stroke to get you a title shot, it's tempting to roll the dice and go with Don King, especially if you're broke and he's offering a signing bonus or advance.

Valid points for sure. Bryan is the WBA scoobie doo champion & Flores was his opponent for the vacant belt. Vanes got the GGG fight. You make a great point about why some may sign with him...
