It is just a way to to help your rhythm and breathing while punching. Sport Science actually had an experiment with Rampage Jackson and they showed they he hit with more force when breathing like that and/or yelling when he would punched!

You are suppose to exhale when throwing a punch to tighten your muscles. Prepares your body for the impact of a counter shot, plus punching without breathing makes you tired quicker.

It's because muscles require oxygen just like everything else in our bodies. If we aren't supplying it, they will fatigue and then you are ****ed.
