According to Fat Daniel. Was supposed to be Oct 7 in LA at Staples. Money and tune-ups were apparently the cause.

per Fat Dan

"The rematch between featherweight world titleholder Leo Santa Cruz (33-1-1, 18 KOs) and secondary titlist and mandatory challenger Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15 KOs), which was penciled in to headline a Showtime card on Oct. 7 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, will not happen this year, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told EPSN. The WBA, the organization sanctioning the fight, canceled a purse bid recently when the camps told it a deal was in place -- but it never did get completed, the sources said. There were a variety of issues, including how the fighters would split the money. Also, the source said that the Santa Cruz side preferred for there to be a doubleheader on which both fighters faced other lesser opponents before having the rematch in early 2018, but that did not interest Showtime. Santa Cruz outpointed Mares by majority decision in their action-packed featherweight title bout for Los Angeles bragging rights at Staples Center in August 2015."

What happens to Mares belt? I thought he just vacated or was stripped of the WBA Regular belt because he was fighting Santa Cruz the WBA Super champ. WBA just sanctioned Jesus Rojas vs Claudio Marrero for the WBA title on the Canelo/GGG undercard

At the moment, the WBA also recognizes Leo Santa Cruz as the "super champion" in the featherweight division. The "regular" champion until recently was Abner Mares.
"But as Santa Cruz and Mares are going to fight for the super championship (on October 7), the regular title has already been vacated," explained Bustillo to Sanchez.
Mares just lost his belt and the fight

I had no need to see this fight again. Leo clearly won the first fight and was going to win it again. But if you are going to fight what the phuk do you need tune up for? They both fought 1 month apart from each other. Not like one guy just fought while the other has been off for 6 months more and Leo actually fought slightly more recent then Mares. Sounds like Santa Cruz dragged this on and screwed around with Mares and now he lost his belt and wasted most of the year sitting on the bench waiting for Leo.
