  • Need advice, wrist pain with left hook

I have been boxing for almost 5 years now but only recently my left wrist started to hurt really bad every time I throw my left hook. However the pain in my wrist is much less when I throw the left hook with an horizontal fist, meaning with the thumb down, but i'm not used to that and it feels awkward to throw it that way.
I'm an in-fighter I rely on heavily on hooks and my straight punches simply suck.

Should I stop boxing for a couple months or continue training but not throw any left hooks.

    Okay, a few questions:

    Are you wrapping your hands?

How well are you wrapping your hands?

Is your wrist bending? (goosenecking?) If so, I suggest tilting your hand up slightly with the fingers spread and making sure you are a really doing a good job with wrapping using Mexican handwraps of 180"

Is it pain when you hit a bag? Or spar? Or fight? Or all?

Are you wearing gloves all the time?

Are you warming up before you start punching? If so are you stretching the wrists?

What type of exercise do you do for your wrists? At minimum you should be squeezing a ball regularly throughout the day, particularly if you have small wrists.

I'd also suggest some ibuprofen for a while before training if this is a consistent problem.

I'm going to try to be specific without actually asking a lot of questions. Basically, I'm going to assume I know what the problem is based on your description. Could be this, could be something else.

The vast majority of impact force in a closed hook (thump up) is transferred through the first three knuckles of the hand. This means you're encountering the most compression on your scaphoid bone and the scapho-lunate ligament. When you throw an overhand (straight) punch, you have a much higher probability of a difference force distribution across your hand and wrist.

The armchair doctor's diagnosis would say you either have a break in one of the small wrist bones (not a knuckle, because all punching would hurt) or a tear/separation of one of your radial (thumb side) ligaments. Don't ice it, don't over stretch it. Go to a specialist (do not go to a GP and say, 'I jacked up my wrist punching,' because he'll just tell you to stop and give you 800mg motrin) and describe the pain and the cause exactly.

You'll need to take some time off boxing to give your wrist some rest and healing time.

Same thing happened to me before. The coach was like, throw your hook without making a fist (on the mitts). I was like "wtf?" but I did it anyways, and f0cked my wrist right up.

I'm not sure what kind of injury it was but basically I couldn't throw anything with my left hand. It would hurt at the wrist, way too much.

A few weeks of no boxing and allowing it to heal up. It eventually went back to normal.

Thats just my experience with the same sort of issue and by weeks, it wasn't like a week or two. It was probably about a month before my wrist was okay again.

May be, there might be a bone problem. Sometimes this problem occurs when the bones are weak. My cousin was having the same problem, and when get a checkup form the doctor, he found that there was a gap between the bone. Know more at cellublue.com

            Have you considered amputation?

It's hard to classify the problem, but often times it's swelling/tendonitis. take an NSAID.

If it's a chronic problem, could be a ganglion cyst. I have them in both wrists. But proper treatment of symptoms and you'll be fine.
