He's actually 12 and Wilder should get no credit for picking on a kid.

He is out of Cuba now and has no reason to lie about his age either to make himself younger or older than he really is. I think he is 38 just like he says he is. He doesn't look younger than 38.

It doesn't matter how young or old he is, he's on blood pressure medication.

But what if Ortiz is actually a younger man pretending to be an old dude? To get more credit or to have his opponents let their guards down?

          Just a thought.

Ortiz is likely the exact age he claims.

The reason to lie about your age is so that when you're competing in youth competitions, you have an advantage, start impressing the right people, are more likely to get money put behind you, etc.

But Ortiz started his amateur career at such a late age that there would be no incentive to lie about his age. Pretending to be 25 when you're really 30 gives you no advantage. You're fighting the same people.

The advantage comes when you're 14 and you pretend to be 10 to fight younger kids.

Go look at amateur footage of Ortiz and he's clearly the age he claims.
